The Department of Physics was established as an independent entity in 2012, having previously been part of the Department of Applied Sciences at Giani Zail Singh Campus College of Engineering and Technology since 1989, where it primarily served engineering students. The launch of the postgraduate M.Sc. Physics program in 2012 marked the department's commitment to specialized physics education.

Since its inception, the department has diversified its academic and research portfolio, emerging as a leading research and development center in the region. Its distinguished faculty, renowned for their extensive teaching background and international research experience, are a cornerstone of its success. In addition, the department offers comprehensive Ph.D. programs—both full-time and part-time—in specialized fields including Radiation Physics, Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanotechnology, Ferroelectric Ceramics, Polymer Composite Films, and Theoretical Physics.
