Department of Physics, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU) Bathinda celebrated National Science Day - 2023 on the theme ‘Global Science for Global Wellbeing’ on 7th March 2023. The event was catalysed and Supported by ‘Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST)’, ‘National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCTSC)’, ‘Department of Science & Technology (DST)’, GoI.
The Students, Faculty & Staff celebrated the event with great zeal and enthusiasm. Under-graduate & Post-graduate students of various departments of the University participated in different events like Poster Making, Best out of Waste, Rangoli etc.
The Mementos to the winners and certificates to the participants were awarded. In the ‘Best out of Waste’ Event Tarunpreet Singh (B.Tech ECE - 8th Sem.) and Saleem Khan B.Tech. EE - 8th Sem.) secured 1st Position. 2nd Position was secured by Gurleen Singh & Pratiksha of B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics - 4th Sem. & 3rd Position was bagged by Himanshi of M.Sc. Physics - 4th Sem. In Rangoli Competition, Arundeep Kaur & Simrandeep Kaur (B.Sc. Hons. Physics - 4th Sem.) stood 1st, Manpinder Kaur & Jashanpreet Kaur (B.Sc Hons. Physics - 2nd Sem.) stood 2nd. In Poster making Bhinder Singh, BFA, 2nd Sem & Sneha Diman, B.Pharmacy 4th Sem. Secured 1st Position, Shivam Bhadauria (B.Pharmacy 6th Sem), Gurpreet Singh (BFA 2nd Sem.) Secured 2nd & Diya Puri BSc. (Hons.) Chemistry - 4th Sem.) secured the 3rd position.
Head of the Department Prof. Sandeep Kansal, appreciated the whole hearted efforts of Program Co-ordinator Dr. Gagan Gupta and entire organizing team of the department to make this event a grand success. The Department of Physics organized an educational tour of students on 21st September 2022 toward "Cyclotron Facility' available with Punjab University Chandigarh, under the theme " Acquaintance with history of Science in Punjab". The said Cyclotron is one of the world’s oldest particle accelerators, built in the 1930s and sent from the University of Rochester USA to be housed at Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1967. During the visit students were excited to know that Cyclotron is still working even after its long service of more than 90 years. Technicians and Scholars using the accelerator made students aware about its working and basic procedure adopted to reveal the hidden properties of materials. Students were grateful to have acquaintance with an ancient accelerator and to know about the latest accelerator technology used word wild by the research community, nowadays. The Department of Physics acknowledges the support and encouragement of Vice Chancellor MRSPTU in organizing this tour.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU) Bathinda’s Department of Physics celebrated "International Ozone Day -2022" on 16th SEPTEMBER 2022 on the theme “GLOBAL COOPERATION PROTECTING LIFE ON EARTH” The event was conducted in collaboration with ‘Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST), Department of Science & Technology (DST), GoI.
International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (informally called Ozone Day) is celebrated on September 16 designed by the United Nations General Assembly. This designation had been made on December 19, 2000, in commemoration of the date, in 1987, on which nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. In 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of that Montreal Protocol.
Students from various Institutes ie. Colleges & Schools and from various departments of the University participated in different events like Model Display, Poster Making, Best out of Waste etc.
Talking about the Importance of celebrating this day and how the closure of the hole in the ozone layer was observed 30 years after the protocol was signed, Head of the Department Prof. Sandeep Kansal, appreciated the whole hearted efforts of the Organizing Team.

The Department of Physics, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University Bathinda organized one-week AICTE-Training and Learning Academy sponsored ATAL Faculty Development Program on “Novel Materials and their Applications” from 19th July to 23rd July 2021. The Faculty Development Program (FDP) formally started with the Inaugural Function.
Prof. Rabinder Nath, a renowned academician and researcher in the field of Sensors and Computer Memories, presently Senior Professor at Department of Physics, IIT, Roorkee was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Prof. Nath appreciated for organizing such a wonderful activity and growth of the Department in a short span of time. In his keynote speech he talked about the development of Novel Materials. He also elaborated about growth of semiconducting, magnetic and ferroelectric material and its miniaturization to deploy in nanotechnology.
In this workshop a total 14 resource persons from various prestigious institutions/research laboratories such as Thapar Institute, IIT Ropar, CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory Jamshedpur, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar etc. delivered lectures for the consecutive five day in three sessions per day. A total 200 participants from all the states of the India were registered for this program. Various advanced research topics had been discussed in this workshop like: energy materials, nano-materials, advanced composites, glassy and amorphous materials,, influence of ion beam on novel materials etc.
Prof. (Dr.) Jasbir Singh Hundal, Prof. & Head of the Department conveyed that Department offers Ph.D. (Physics), M.Sc. Physics and B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics and it a good research and development center in this region. The Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Buta Singh Sidhu in his address thanked the Chariman AICTE for providing financial assistance to conduct this FDP. He also congratulated the Department for organizing the activity.
Prof. (Dr.) Karanveer Singh, controller of examination, MRSPTU Bathinda was the Chief Guest for the valedictory function of the one week FDP. He addressed the audience and congratulated the whole team for successfully organizing the activity. Dr. Veena Sharma, Assistant Professor presented Vote of Thanks and expressed gratitude to Chief Guest of the function for sparing his valuable time and the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. & Head of the Department for providing support and guidance. She extended thanks toward Chairman, AICTE for financial assistance. At the last she thanked participants and wished them for having cheerful and enlightened sessions.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda’s department of Physics organised an online cultural activity namely ‘Fiziki-2020’. The event was on the theme ‘Renowned Scientists and Engineers of Punjab’.
The Programme got an overwhelming response as the students from various institutions from Punjab and nearby states participated in this programme in different events. The competitions included three events namely: Essay Writing, Speech and Poster Making so as to make the competition more comprehensive, for enabling the students to communicate in whichever medium they are confident.
In this completion Mahaveer Prasad from Swami Shraddhanand College, University of Delhi stood first in essay writing competition, Divya Gupta from Pharmaceutical Sciences MRSPTU, Bathinda secured first position in Poster making and Riddhim of Department of Mathematics MRSPTU, Bathinda won first position in Speech Competition.
Dr. Hundal congratulated all the winners and presented ‘Merit Certificates’ as a token of appreciation. On behalf of the Department Dr. Satnam Singh, Teacher Co-ordinator of the activity thanked all the participants by presenting ‘Participation Certificates’.
The responsibilities of the educational institutions are not only confined up to classroom teaching, several activities are required to make students acquainted with practical situations. In this context, the Department of Physics, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University organized an educational tour of BSc and MSc students to Guru Har Gobind Thermal Plant (GHTP), Lehra Mohhabat. The head of the department Dr. Jasbir S. Hundal along with Dr. Satnam Singh, Dr. Pooja Devi, Sh. Jaswinder Singh, Mr. Rahul Menon also accompanied students.
At Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant students interacted with Er. Vikas Garg (Sr. Xen.) and Er. Kulwinder Singh (JE). They explained the functioning of Thermal Plant and its different units like, Cooling Tower, Boiler, Turbine, DM water section, Auxiliary section, Control Unit etc. Students were delighted to get answers of their queries from the experts.
The more interested part of this tour was an essay writing competition entitled, “Portrait of the Educational Tour Competition” which has been organized after returning from the tour. Students sketched excellent portraits using the observations they collected during the educational tour. While giving awards for this activity Prof. (Dr.) Jasbir S. Hundal said that this type of activates inculcate presentation skills within the students.
The department of Physics expresses gratitude toward Dr. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, MRSPTU Bathinda, for granting permission to organize this educational tour.
The department of Physics, MRSPTU organized a Blood donation camp and dedicated it to Pulwama attack martyrs. In this camp Shri Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu PCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bathinda and Prof.(Dr.) Jasbir Singh Hundal presented Certificates and Mementos to the blood donors as token of appreciation
National Science Day celebration is an annual one day event of Department of Physics. The students of the department and faculty participate for success of the event with enthusiasm. Various activities like poster making, speech, quiz etc are organized. The main motto is to pay attribute to the Nobel laureates Dr. C.V. Raman and inculcate sprit of science in the students.
